Not much work done in the studio today, alot of social activity though. Hopefully Christin will be joining me and Karin in our studio, I would so love to have her there!

To teach is to challange yourself!
-----
Yesterday I decided to give my illustration students a workshop in papercutting, without ever tryed it myself. Some people would say that it´s crazy to teach like that, I would say that it´s very unpretentious and playful. AND aslong as you do a good reaserarch (there is so much nice papercuts to find on the internet that describes all the possibilitys within the method) and have the right materials, what can go wrong? Above you can see one of my first attempts with the knife and on the following photos you can see some of the students result from the workshop.I think I´m hooked, I like that it´s almost like drawing, it takes very long time and lots of concentration. There is no way to erase and a mistake has to be turned into a possibility. Just my way of working!

Enjoy your weekend! I will be teaching a pattern workshop this weekend and patterns is something I have done before, so it won´t be trial and error!Thursday, 24 February 2011

My new friend!
Some people need silence when they draw, I am almost the other way around. I like small talk and it doesn´t disturb my concentration. Latley I have enjoyed little Js company, drawing and smalltalking and watching "halv åtta hos mig" with me. He askes me things and is interested in the things that interests me. Like my blue rubber pen: how does it work? is it posible to draw with it?,whats the purpose of it, if not to draw with it? I´ve got a new friend!

Going through my markers, part 2
Is there a difference between promarkers and copic? They have the same nibs, two different ones (see them in the second pucture). Copic has some very light pastels that I use alot, ice blue, mint green and very pale pink, and Copic markers can be refilled. thats about he only difference there is.
In the last image u can see touch markers, they have the same nibs but the colors are more intense and the pastels are very colorful, it´s hard to find pale shades. They are cheaper than both promarkers and copic and can be nice to start with, but I have to warn you, the quality isn´t good and they dry very fast!
---
I would love to try these in color. In black they are absolutly my favourite fineline pen, but how will they work in color? Anyone that have tried them?

Starting my curtain project!
I am trying to decide the color range for my new project. I am woking with blue and green colors in 2 patterns (already decided cause of the flooring in the room) and then I need something complementary in the two other and they will be the backside of the curtain. Pink feels interesting but it´s kind of temporary for me, from time to time I hate pink. This is something that needs to last for a long time since it´s a public piece for a pree school. Now I will order some new markers and see what happens next!

Going through my markers, part 1
I´m going through my markers and trying to figure out what kind of colors I need for my curtain project. Promarkers was the first markers I bought, they have two different nibs and can´t be refilled. I use them for coloring larger areas and smoothen the borders between different shapes. Most of the time I use the trias to "draw" with, to get the fine lines, and then I go over the areas that I want to smoothen up with one marker ( see top image), satin is my favourite. In my drawings there are very little clean white paper left, and what can be taken for white is almost never white. Therefor most of my promarkers are in neutral colors.

New pattern
If someone would ask me if I sketch I would answer: no, never. Sometimes an idea grows in my head during a very long time. I have been thinking about making a pattern that is inspired by totem poles since I saw this a cuple of years ago, I love all of their stuff, go here to see more: www.ourchildrensgorilla.com.
The idea didn´t leave my head so yesterday I finally started. What you see above is my way of sketching. When I do it I prefer using a marker that has a big tip, the sketching is more free and open then. I will probably continue on this one using my lightingtable (my favourite item!) and add other animal characters, any ideas?
